Its pretty easy compact. With a ranger i would use that troll spell lol what ever its called- health regen ( i dont use rangers ). And use weapon attacks from what ever weapon you use (i find sword is best)
Sword.. (1)final thrust (2) Gash (3) another damaging attack (4) Healing Sig (5) flurry maby (6) A attack that stops them using healing signet (since they use that alot) (7) ranger healy thingy (8) sprint
Not sure about axe lol

W/R using traps is not a good idea. Too slow, and probably better to go pure warrior in that case.
Might consider Apply Poison, Tiger's Fury and/or Troll Unguent

Is he talking about a Primary or Secondary Ranger?
If Primary, then go Traps.
If Secondary, then use Tiger's Fury instead of Flurry.

Do you think an R/W could do it with evasive stances and melee weapons instead of traps?
If not, how would a trapper do it? I'm very bad at trapping :P

Evasive stance would do squat against Irresistible blow (Bypasses Evasive Stances).
Either use a heavy Degen build with bleeding and poison and some form of interrupt on their healing signet or stacking traps in one area then lure the Ettins on the tainted ground.

You could just degen trap them (flame traps + barbed traps = 11 degen...I know the max is 10).
For W/R (I just made one that uses an axe) I was thinking:
Eviscerate {e}
Penetrating Blow
Executioner's Strike
Distracting Blow
Troll Unguent
Storm Chaser or Sprint
Healing Signet
Tiger's Fury
It would need wilderness survival points, so likely something like:
12 axe
8 tactics
8 beast mastery
8 wilderness survival
Tactics is lower just because I have two sources of healing.

I farm them with Ragemending (or a version of it I invented after hearing a very vague description of RM)
Healing - 8
Strength - 11+1
Axe - 11+1+3
Battle Rage [E]
Penetrating Blow
Dismember
Executioners Strike
Axe Twist
Disrupting Chop
Mending
Live Vicariously

Nice, if an axe is your cup of tea. In chapter 2 thankfully there will be more adrenaline based axe attacks.
For now though, a sword build is slightly faster, in my opinion:
Sprint
Battle Rage {E}
Sever
Gash
Galrath
Final Thrust
Live Vicariously
Mending
LV + mending is overkill, and I only use LV when up against scales (to cancel our price of failure) or if I'm fighting a large group (6+).
Sprint reallly helps out since it speeds up the run and allows you to get past scales w/o relying on the speed boost from Battle Rage. Also there are no more sword adrenaline based skills to use Chapter 2 will bring us more however
EDIT: Oh and as for attributes:
Swordsmanship: 16
Healing Prayers: 8
Rest in Strength with a +1 rune
Use a Fiery Sword Hilt and a 15% damage while enchanted sword and you can hit up to 188 with Final Thrust.

I use sword, with these:
Healing Sig
Doylak
Sprint
Gash
Galrath Slash
Power Attack
Watch Yourself
Sever Artery
Just pretty much keep doylak and and watch running, if you drop below 100, heal sig it, and youll be fine, otherwise, no problem taking them out... if their healing gets annoying, just replace sprint with Salvage Slash to interrupt it... even without interrupt tho, its not hard to take them out at all. Take on 3 or 4 at a time easily..
12 Swordsmanship
12 Strength
11 Tactics

12 tactics
5 inspiration
physical resistance
100 blades
watch yourself
galrath
final thrust
dolyak
heal sig
sprint
I use an icy dragon sword and -2 in stance +45hp in stance sheild

only problem is those gold will most likely be majors when ID'ed or worthless superiors.... Unless i'm just plain unlucky, I have spent ridiclous hours rune farming and for the time i've put in the profit seems very very small.... The only Superior vigors I've gotten were from dwarves in the shiverpeaks and I still haven't gotten any Sup. Absorption.... I'm going to try the Titan farming.. maybe i'll have some luck there!

I've had 3 sup absorbtions (out of 4 total that I've found) from ettins, and about 15 sup vigors and countless sup monk runes.
I find the runs get better the more I farm them, sort of like an anti-anti-farm.
